You should also start at the ceiling and work your way down to the floor. It can be easy to forget ceiling lights, fans, and other fixtures that are high up but it’s important to get at these areas because dust often collects thickly there. What To Clean With Baking Soda In Your Home

Baking soda is something that most of us have in our homes. We use it for cooking, but have you ever thought that you can use it for cleaning as well? Baking soda is actually a fantastic thing to clean with. It deodorizes and is non-toxic, so it’s safe for kids, pregnant women, and pets. Below, you’ll find some of the household chores that you can complete using baking soda.

Scrub Down The oven

Since ovens can become really dirty, really fast, you need something that can take on the grease. Baking soda is great for this purpose. Make a paste using baking soda and water or vinegar. Let the paste sit in the oven for up to 24 hours. Then wipe the mixture down with a sponge or cloth. You can heat the oven after you do this initial cleaning to help you loosen any additional grease, grime, or food particles. Let the oven cool and wipe it down again. 

Keep Drains Clear


If you notice that your drains are a bit slow, you may want to avoid harsh chemicals and start with the baking soda right in your kitchen. Pour some baking soda into your drain. Then, run some warmed vinegar down the drain immediately afterwards. After you let that mixture go to work for about 10 minutes, you should flush the drain with boiling water. This won’t work on already clogged drains, but it’s great for maintenance on your drains that may be a bit slow. 

Keep Your Fridge Fresh

Your fridge can become a breeding ground for germs, crumbs, and spills. All you need to clean the  refrigerator up is a simple solution made up of baking soda and dish soap. The soap will help to cut any grease that has built up in the appliance, and the baking soda acts as an abrasive to get the gunk up. Just create a paste and apply it in the refrigerator. Then wipe down the shelves with warm water and a sponge. You can even disinfect your sponge in the microwave after you do this. Just place the sponge in the microwave for 2 minutes and you have a sponge that’s like new! 

Freshen Your Washing Machine

Baking soda helps to deodorize things. To deodorize your washer, just pour half a cup of baking soda into the detergent dispenser of the washing machine. Run a cycle through with hot water. Your clothes will be cleaner than they have been in months! Make sure you do this to your washer about once per month to keep it smelling fresh and deter those funky odors from building up in your laundry room. The only thing that should be smelling funky in there are dirty socks!

Simple Maintenance Tips for a Dishwasher

Many people hardly consider the fact that their dishwasher needs cleaning after it is done washing all the dishes. Because of that, a lot are confused about how to go about cleaning and maintaining their dishwasher. Yet, cleaning and maintaining a dishwasher doesn’t have to be tedious. With proper maintenance, you increase the lifespan, giving it all it needs to run smoothly and effectively. 

With just fifteen minutes every month, you can give your dishwasher a thorough cleaning. Your dishwasher, in turn, will reward you with years of excellent service and dedication to you. Some simple ways to maintain and repair your dishwasher are:

Consult the Owner’s Manual

The owner’s manual is an excellent place to start in cleaning your dishwasher. If you cannot find your owner’s manual, I am pretty sure there will be one available online. In the owner’s manual, I am pretty sure you will have instructions about maintenance as well.With the make and model of your dishwasher, getting it online shouldn’t be much stress if you do not have a copy.

Unclog the Sprayer Arms and Nozzles

To get to the sprayer arm, you would have to remove the dishwasher racks. Then, check the nozzles on the sprayer arms and get rid of any clogs with a pipe cleaner or toothpick.

Clean the Drain

The plug for the sink is under the strainer. Hence, you should unplug the dishwasher, especially for built-in models. Also, turn off the circuit breaker to be sure. Be sure to refer to the owner’s manual to confirm if the tray by the drain can be removed entirely or just slides off. Get rid of debris or food drain under the unit. 

Inspect the racks

Check the racks for chips and repair. If you discover that the dishwater rack looks bad or worn, rack paint for dishwashers comes in assorted colors. You will be sure to find a shade of paint that goes with the rack. You can get one from the manufacturer or online. You can get replacement racks if your dishwasher is already severely rusted.

Get rid of Soap Scum by running Vinegar through the Dishwasher Cycle

Allow the touch-up paint to dry up if you replaced the racks. You need to run a cup of vinegar on the top shelf of the dishwasher and run a complete cycle. We recommend using a packet of unsweetened lemon-flavored drink mix alongside the vinegar. You should pour it in the detergent compartment and run it through a cycle.

Organizing for the Disinclined

Okay, everyone knows those people … the born organizers. You know the ones, they have a place for everything and a mental file card system reminding them where everything is. These are the people that live by “a place for everything, and everything in its place.”

You, conversely, are lucky to get out of the house with your keys and handbag or wallet. You often leave behind the lunch you painstakingly made the night before, and you root through the dirty laundry looking for the blouse to go with the suit you need to wear TODAY for a presentation you’re about to give. Oh, and the notes for the presentation … you’re writing them on the train on your way into work.

You open your favorite magazine only to find one more article extolling the virtues of organization and you resolve to start right away.But where do you start when you’re so naturally disinclined to organize?

Start small

Trying to implement everything you read in that latest article or blog post by the perfect mommy, choose just one area. Work on your new habit a little each time you think about it until it becomes a habit.

While many people tout the belief that habits form in about 21 days, the truth is that creating automaticity (what psychologists call habit formation) may take much longer than that to develop. A 2009 study by Phillippa Lally, et al., at the University College London, participants averaged 66 days to establish a new healthy habit such as changing their diet or exercising.

As entrenched as your current bent toward messiness and disorderliness is, making the switch to organization won’t come overnight. Nor should you expect it to come naturally.

Pick one

Consider starting with just one of these items. Add it into your life in as seamless a way as possible so that it becomes “organic.”

  • Place a wastebasket in each room, near the doorway. If the receptacle is not handy or visible, using it won’t be automatic. Set another trashcan near where you sort mail. Notice, this is not a new place to sort mail that has a trash can, it is moving a trashcan to where you already sort mail, but it on the sofa, the kitchen table or just inside the back door.
  • Add hooks to the back of each door. Dropped sweaters, jackets, scarves, and backpacks quickly clutter a space. A liberal quantity of hooks encourages hanging up at least some of these.
  • Use plastic tubs. Chances are if you’re organizationally challenged, your family members are as well. Place a basket or container for each person in the mudroom or on the way up the steps. In goes shoes, toys, books, and anything else that one might leave behind in another room. At the end of each day, each person only has one thing to grab on their way to bed.
